Dishwasher repair guide

Dishwasher not draining?

Standing water after a cycle can point to a blocked filter, a restricted drain path, or a pump fault. The amount of water, any error code, and whether the machine makes a draining sound are useful clues. Start with the checks below and follow your model’s manual.

What may be happening

Common clues

  • Food or debris in the filter

Grease, labels, bones, or broken glass can obstruct the filter and sump. A filter that looks clear on top may still have debris underneath, so inspect only the removable parts described in the manual.

  • A restricted drain hose or sink connection

A kinked hose, a blocked sink waste connection, or a recently changed plumbing connection can prevent water from leaving. Built-in machines should not be pulled out just to inspect a hose.

  • A drain-pump or sensor fault

If the filter and visible drain path are clear but the machine hums, clicks, or stops with water inside, a pump, wiring, or control fault may need professional testing.

Start safely

Useful checks before calling

  1. 1
    Stop the programme

Cancel the cycle and switch the dishwasher off. If the plug or isolator is dry and safely reachable, isolate power before cleaning; never touch a wet socket or plug.

  2. 2
    Remove water carefully

Use a cup and towels to lower the water level. Wear sturdy gloves and stop if you see sharp glass, hot water, or anything you cannot remove safely.

  3. 3
    Check the removable filter

Remove and rinse the filter only as the manufacturer describes. Look for trapped food or labels, then refit it securely before running another cycle.

  4. 4
    Observe the next drain

If it is safe to run an empty rinse, listen for the drain phase and note whether water returns from the sink connection. Stop if the leak or noise worsens.

Safety comes first

Do not reach into a pump opening or touch broken glass. If water is near electrics, there is a burning smell, or the appliance is leaking heavily, keep clear and seek urgent professional help.

Know when to hand it over

When to contact a repairer

Arrange a qualified appliance repairer if water remains after the filter is clean, the drain pump is unusually loud or silent, an error returns, or the dishwasher trips power. A recurring fault is not fixed by repeatedly restarting the programme.

Useful details to have ready

  • How much water remains and where it sits
  • Any error code and the point in the cycle when it appears
  • Whether the sink also drains slowly or water returns into the dishwasher

Common questions

Is a small amount of water near the filter always a fault?

Not every model drains to a completely dry sump. Check the owner’s manual for your dishwasher and compare with its normal finish. Water covering the filter or returning after a cycle deserves further checking.

Should I dismantle the drain pump to clear it?

No. Pump access can expose sharp debris, water, and electrical parts. Clean only user-removable parts identified in the manual; leave pump inspection and electrical testing to a qualified repairer.
